CRADLE OF CHINESE CIVILIZATION — 12 Days Through the Heart of the Central Plains

12 Days

Overview

From Shaolin Zen to Shang Dynasty Bronzes: A Pilgrimage to the Source of Chinese Culture.

There are journeys that take you to beautiful places. And then there are journeys that take you to the source.

This 12-day odyssey traverses the Central Plains of Henan — the cradle of Chinese civilization, where the Yellow River gave birth to the world’s longest continuous culture. Here, in the heartland between Zhengzhou, Dengfeng, Luoyang, and Anyang, the defining pillars of Chinese identity were forged: Buddhism took root at the White Horse Temple, Zen martial arts were born at Shaolin, Confucian scholarship flourished at Songyang Academy, and the Shang Dynasty left its oracle bones buried beneath the earth for over three millennia, waiting to reveal the earliest known Chinese writing.

This journey is not a survey course. It is a deep, unhurried immersion into four distinct layers of the Chinese story — the spiritual (Shaolin Temple and the Zen tradition), the philosophical (Songyang Academy and Confucian thought), the imperial (Longmen Grottoes and the grandeur of Tang-era devotion), and the archaeological (the Shang Dynasty ruins at Yinxu, where China’s first written characters were unearthed). Along the way, you will stay in international five-star hotels, travel by high-speed rail through the modern arteries of the Central Plains, and sit down to private meals of Henan’s refined, understated cuisine — one of China’s oldest and least-known culinary traditions.

There are no rushed bus transfers, no staged performances, and no compulsory shopping arrangements. Just a slow, contemplative pilgrimage into the heart of a civilization — where every pagoda, every oracle bone, every carved Buddha tells a story that began over three thousand years ago.

Trip Highlights

  • Stand at the birthplace of Zen Buddhism — walk the ancient courtyards of Shaolin Temple, watch a professional martial arts demonstration by trained Shaolin disciples included in your temple ticket, and stand in silence before the Pagoda Forest, where 240 stone stupas mark the resting places of generations of abbots
  • Trace the earliest Chinese writing — at the Yinxu Museum in Anyang, stand before the very oracle bones and bronze ritual vessels that revealed the Shang Dynasty to the modern world, the first dynasty in Chinese history confirmed by both documentary records and archaeological evidence
  • Witness the grandeur of Tang Dynasty devotion at the Longmen Grottoes — over 100,000 Buddhist figures carved into limestone cliffs spanning one kilometer, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the finest collections of Chinese stone art on earth. From March 30 to October 31, enjoy the exclusive illuminated "Lighting Longmen" night tour of the Fengxian Temple area; during winter months, the experience is replaced with a night visit to the Sui-Tang Luoyang City Ruins
  • Visit China's first Buddhist temple — the White Horse Temple, founded in 68 CE, where Indian monks first translated Buddhist scriptures into Chinese, marking the beginning of Buddhism's transformation into a Chinese faith
  • Enter the halls where Confucian scholars shaped East Asia — Songyang Academy, one of China's four great ancient academies, where the greatest minds of the Song Dynasty gathered to teach and debate the classics
  • All intercity transfers by high-speed rail — Zhengzhou, Dengfeng, Luoyang, and Anyang connected by one of the world's most advanced rail networks, with private vehicle support for all station and scenic area transfers
  • Stay in international five-star hotels throughout, including the JW Marriott Hotel Zhengzhou (located in the iconic Qianxi Plaza) and Luoyang Marriott Hotel, with private Chinese guides with native-level English proficiency and a pace designed for mature travelers
