Overview
From China’s Holiest Mountain to the Birthplace of Confucius: A Slow Pilgrimage Through the Heart of Chinese Civilization.
There are two places in China that every Chinese person knows, even if they have never set foot there. One is Mount Tai, the most revered of the Five Great Mountains, where emperors came to perform the sacred Fengshan rites and where sunrise over a sea of clouds has inspired poets for three millennia. The other is Qufu, the hometown of Confucius, whose teachings shaped East Asian civilization for over two thousand years and whose descendants still live in the same family compound after 77 generations.
This 10-day journey connects these two pillars of Chinese culture with the spring-fed city of Jinan, a place so abundant in artesian water that its very name means “South of the Ji River.” You will ascend Mount Tai by cable car and spend a night on the summit, waking before dawn to watch the sunrise from the highest point of the mountain where emperors once knelt. You will walk through the Kong Family Mansion and the tranquil forest of the Kong Family Cemetery in Qufu, where Confucius and his descendants have been laid to rest for over two millennia. And you will stand at the edge of Baotu Spring, whose waters have been gushing forth for over 3,500 years, in the heart of a city that the poet Du Fu called “the most beautiful in China.”
The pace is designed for mature travelers. Mount Tai is ascended by cable car and shuttle bus, minimizing stairs. Qufu’s sites are on flat terrain with accessible pathways. Daily driving is strictly limited, and the high-speed rail connections between Jinan, Tai’an, and Qufu are among the shortest in China — just 17–24 minutes between each city.
There are no rushed bus transfers, no compulsory shopping stops. Just a journey to the two places that, more than any others, define what it means to be Chinese.

Private transfer to Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport.
Your private chauffeur will be waiting at Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport holding a name sign. Transfer to your hotel takes approximately 40–50 minutes. No activities are scheduled today. After a transpacific flight, rest and recovery are paramount.
In the early evening, your guide can suggest a gentle stroll around Daming Lake, one of Jinan's three great scenic spots. The lakeside promenade is flat, paved, and free to enter. Willows dip into the water, and pavilions dot the shoreline — this is the Jinan that the Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu described as "the most beautiful city in China."
Accommodation: Kempinski Hotel Jinan — a luxury five-star hotel managed by Kempinski Group, opened 2025 in the Hanyu Golden Valley, approximately 30 minutes by car from Jinan West Station. Trip.com score 9.2/10 with 2,247 reviews.
Meals Included: Welcome Dinner
After a leisurely breakfast, visit Thousand Buddha Mountain (admission ¥30 peak season, open 06:00–18:30 peak season). The mountain is best visited in the morning when temperatures are cooler. We highly recommend the cable car (one-way ¥20, round-trip ¥30) for the ascent to the summit pavilion, where you can enjoy panoramic views over Jinan. The ancient Buddhist carvings that give the mountain its name are clustered along the hillside, and the walk down through the forested paths is gentle and shaded.
In the afternoon, visit Jinan's legendary springs. Start at Baotu Spring (admission ¥40 peak season, open 07:00–19:00 peak season), the most famous of Jinan's "Seventy-Two Famous Springs," whose waters have been gushing forth for over 3,500 years. Continue to Five Dragon Pool (free entry) and Black Tiger Spring (free entry), where locals still gather to fill bottles with spring water. All three are on flat terrain with well-maintained pathways.
Note on Shandong Cuisine: Shandong cuisine is one of China's great culinary traditions, but it tends to be saltier and oilier than the lighter southern cuisines. Your guide will communicate with restaurants in advance to request lighter, milder options. If you have specific dietary needs, please inform us at least 10 days before departure.
Accommodation: Kempinski Hotel Jinan
Meals Included: Breakfast
Morning high-speed train from Jinan West Station to Tai'an Station (approximately 17–24 minutes, approximately 102 daily departures). Upon arrival, a private vehicle transfers you to your hotel.
In the afternoon, visit the Dai Temple (admission included in Mount Tai ticket, open 08:00–17:30, last entry 17:00). This is the ancient gateway to Mount Tai, where emperors would pause to pay respects before beginning their ascent. As one of China's four great ancient architectural complexes, the Dai Temple rivals the Forbidden City in grandeur. Its centerpiece is the Tiankuang Hall, a Song Dynasty masterpiece with a double-eaved roof and a massive Daoist mural. A sightseeing cart (one-way ¥10) can take you from the south gate to the north gate, reducing walking distance.
Accommodation: Hilton Garden Inn Tai'an Taishan Scenic Area — a Hilton-managed hotel located approximately 10 minutes by car from the Tianwai Village entrance to Mount Tai. Trip.com score 9.1/10 with 3,998 reviews.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Morning transfer to the Tianwai Village entrance of Mount Tai. Board the scenic area shuttle bus (one-way ¥35, round-trip ¥70) to Mid-Heaven Gate (Zhongtianmen), a 30-minute ride through forested slopes. From here, take the Zhongtianmen Cable Car (one-way ¥100) to South Heaven Gate (Nantianmen), ascending through mist and cloud in approximately 10 minutes. Important: The cable car operates 06:00–18:30 during peak season (April 1–October 31), with the last ticket sold at 18:00. During off-peak season (November 1–March 31), hours are 08:00–17:00. If you miss the last cable car, the only way down is on foot — a 3-hour descent that is physically demanding for any traveler. Please adhere strictly to the schedule.
From South Heaven Gate, walk along Heavenly Street (Tianjie), a paved path lined with shops and teahouses perched on the mountain ridge. Visit the Azure Cloud Temple (Bixia Ci), dedicated to the goddess of Mount Tai, and the Great View Peak (Daguan Feng), where emperors left inscriptions carved into the cliff face. The walk from South Heaven Gate to the summit hotel takes approximately 30 minutes at a gentle pace.
Settle into your summit hotel in the afternoon. In the early evening, walk to the Sunset Viewing Point near the Jade Emperor Peak — the highest point on Mount Tai at 1,545 meters. The sunset over the sea of clouds is one of the mountain's four great spectacles.
Summit Accommodation: The Shenqi Hotel is the best available accommodation on the summit (three-star), with some rooms offering private bathrooms. Peak season (April–October) rates are approximately ¥1,200–1,800 per night for a standard room, including breakfast for two. Reservations must be made 1–2 months in advance during peak season. If the Shenqi Hotel is fully booked, the alternative is the Tianjie Hotel (¥800–1,200 per night, some rooms with private bathrooms). Summit hotels do not have air conditioning (fans are provided in summer), and hot water is available with limited hours. The hotel provides complimentary down coats for sunset and sunrise viewing. Important: Summit temperatures are 5–10°C lower than at the mountain base, and 10–12°C lower at sunrise. Military coats can be rented (approximately ¥50 per coat).
Alternative Option — Descend on Day 4: If you prefer not to stay overnight on the summit, you may descend by cable car on Day 4 after the summit visit and stay at the Hilton Garden Inn Tai'an. This option trades the sunrise experience for a more comfortable night's sleep. Please indicate your preference at time of booking.
Accommodation: Shenqi Hotel, Summit of Mount Tai (or Tianjie Hotel if Shenqi is fully booked)
Meals Included: Breakfast
Rise before dawn. Your guide will confirm the exact sunrise time. Walk to the Jade Emperor Peak or the Sunrise Viewing Platform near your hotel. As the sky lightens over the sea of clouds, the granite peaks emerge from darkness — this is the moment that emperors, poets, and pilgrims have climbed this mountain for over two millennia to witness.
After sunrise, return to your hotel for breakfast. Descend by cable car from South Heaven Gate to Mid-Heaven Gate, then take the shuttle bus back to Tianwai Village. Transfer to your Tai'an hotel to collect luggage, then proceed to Tai'an Station for the high-speed train to Qufu East Station (approximately 20 minutes, approximately 55 daily departures).
Upon arrival in Qufu, transfer to your hotel and check in. After a relaxed lunch, visit the Kong Family Mansion (admission ¥60, or ¥140 for the Three Kongs combined ticket; open 08:00–17:30, last entry 17:00). This is the largest family compound in Chinese history, where 77 generations of Confucius's descendants have lived continuously since the Sage's time. The mansion's halls, courtyards, and private gardens reveal the extraordinary continuity of a single family's legacy over two millennia. Allow approximately 2.5 hours.
Accommodation: Qufu Lufa JW Marriott Hotel — managed by Marriott International, opened 2019, approximately 5 minutes' walk to the Three Kongs Scenic Area. Trip.com score 9.3/10 with 3,464 reviews.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Morning visit to the Temple of Confucius (admission ¥80, or included in the ¥140 combined ticket; open 08:00–17:30, last entry 17:00). This is the largest and most important Confucian temple in the world, a sprawling complex of courtyards, halls, and ancient cypress trees that has been rebuilt and expanded over two thousand years by successive dynasties seeking to honor the Sage. Allow 3–4 hours for an unhurried visit. Free guided tours are available every hour on the hour inside the temple.
Please Note: The Temple of Confucius is an active cultural heritage site. Please refrain from smoking, loud conversation, and photography inside the main halls.
In the afternoon, journey to Nishan Sacred Land (admission ¥160, sightseeing cart ¥20, "Sound of Metal and Jade" performance ticket from ¥120; 60–69 half-price admission, 70+ free admission). Nishan is the birthplace of Confucius, and this modern cultural complex honors his legacy with a 72-meter bronze statue of the Sage, the magnificent University Hall, and the spectacular "Sound of Metal and Jade" evening performance.
We recommend departing from Qufu at approximately 14:00 (30-minute drive), entering the scenic area by 14:30. Visit the University Hall (2 hours) and the Confucius statue area (1 hour). After dinner at the scenic area (approximately 18:30), attend the "Sound of Metal and Jade" performance (19:30–20:15). After the performance, return to Qufu city center (arriving approximately 21:00).
Accommodation: Qufu Lufa JW Marriott Hotel
Meals Included: Breakfast
Morning visit to the Kong Family Cemetery (admission ¥10, or included in the ¥140 combined ticket; open 08:00–17:30, last entry 17:00). This is the largest family cemetery in the world, where Confucius and over 100,000 of his descendants have been laid to rest over two millennia. The cemetery spans 2 kilometers in depth, and a sightseeing cart (one-way ¥10, round-trip ¥20) is strongly recommended to reduce walking time. Allow approximately 2 hours.
After the visit, take the high-speed train from Qufu East Station to Jinan West Station (approximately 30–50 minutes, depending on the specific train). Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel.
In the late afternoon, visit the Shandong Provincial Museum (free entry, advance reservation required via official WeChat account, open Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, closed Mondays). The museum's Confucian Culture Exhibition and Han Dynasty Stone Relief Exhibition provide thematic context for the journey you have just completed. Please note: If Day 7 falls on a Monday, the museum visit will be rescheduled to an alternative day.
Accommodation: Kempinski Hotel Jinan
Meals Included: Breakfast
A full day for independent exploration or an optional day trip to Qingzhou Ancient City (approximately 1.5 hours by private vehicle from Jinan, 5A-rated scenic area, free entry). Qingzhou was one of the ancient Nine Provinces of China, and its well-preserved old city walls, cobblestone streets, and the exceptional Qingzhou Museum — widely regarded as one of the finest county-level museums in China — offer a quieter, more intimate alternative to the grand imperial sites of Mount Tai and Qufu.
Please Note: Qingzhou Museum is closed on Mondays. If Day 8 falls on a Monday, the day trip will be rescheduled to an alternative day or an alternative destination will be suggested.
Alternatively, you may choose to spend the day exploring Jinan at your own pace. Your guide can recommend additional sites or assist with shopping.
Accommodation: Kempinski Hotel Jinan
Meals Included: Breakfast
Morning stroll through Qushuiting Street and Baihua Zhou, two of Jinan's best-preserved old neighborhoods. Here, spring water still flows through stone channels along the lanes, and traditional courtyard houses open onto willow-lined canals — a glimpse of the Jinan that Du Fu once praised.
The remainder of the day is free for independent exploration and shopping. Your guide can recommend local specialties such as Dong'e Ejiao (donkey-hide gelatin), Zhoucun sesame flatbread, and Longshan millet.
In the evening, gather for a farewell dinner at a carefully selected local restaurant, featuring the refined flavors of Shandong cuisine — a fitting coda to this journey through the heart of Chinese civilization.

The shuttle bus takes you from the mountain base to Mid-Heaven Gate, and the cable car takes you from Mid-Heaven Gate to South Heaven Gate. The walk from South Heaven Gate to the summit hotel is approximately 30 minutes on paved paths with some stone steps. The summit area is relatively flat.

The hotel does not have air conditioning (fans are provided in summer), and hot water is available with limited hours. Summit temperatures are 5–10°C lower than at the mountain base, and 10–12°C lower at sunrise. Military coats can be rented for approximately ¥50 per coat. We believe the privilege of sleeping on China's most sacred mountain far outweighs these minor inconveniences.
Yes. If you prefer a more comfortable night's sleep, you may descend by cable car on Day 4 after the summit visit and stay at the Hilton Garden Inn at the mountain base. This option trades the sunrise experience for a more restful night. Please indicate your preference at time of booking.
April–May and September–October are ideal. Spring brings mild temperatures and the peony blossoms in Jinan. Autumn delivers crisp skies and the best sunrise visibility on Mount Tai. Summer (June–August) is warm, with Jinan temperatures potentially reaching 38°C (100°F) — we recommend carrying water and sun protection. Winter (November–March) is cold, and the cable car may occasionally close during heavy snow.
