Overview
From Sacred Peaks to Ink-Wash Villages: A Slow Pilgrimage Through China’s Most Beautiful Mountain.
There is a mountain in eastern China that has been painted and written about for over a thousand years, yet no brush or pen has ever fully captured it. Huangshan — the Yellow Mountain — is not the highest peak in China, but it is the most revered. Its granite pillars rise through seas of cloud, its ancient pines cling to vertical cliffs, and its sunrises have inspired generations of poets and painters to reach for words and ink that always fell short.
This 8-day journey pairs the grandeur of Huangshan with the quiet beauty of the Huizhou villages at its feet. You will ascend by cable car to spend a night on the summit, waking to watch the sunrise from the Refreshing Terrace. You will walk the cobblestone lanes of Hongcun and Xidi, two UNESCO World Heritage villages whose whitewashed walls and moon-shaped ponds have defined the Chinese idea of rural beauty for centuries. And you will try your hand at two of China’s oldest crafts — the carving of Huizhou ink sticks and the picking of Huangshan Maofeng tea.
The pace is designed for mature travelers. The mountain ascent uses cable cars and a funicular to minimize stairs. Village walks are on flat flagstone paths. Daily driving is strictly limited.
There are no rushed bus transfers, no compulsory shopping stops. Just a journey through China’s most beautiful mountain landscape — where every peak, every village, every cup of tea holds a story that has been told for a thousand years.
Trip Highlights
- Sleep on the summit of Huangshan — spend a night at the Xihai Hotel, watch the sunset from the Cloud-Dispelling Pavilion, and wake before dawn to witness the sunrise from the Refreshing Terrace
- Ascend by cable car through the clouds — all mountain access via the Yungu Cable Car (up), the West Sea Grand Canyon Funicular, and the Yuping Cable Car (down), minimizing stairs to approximately 5.5 hours of gentle walking across two days
- Walk through a living ink-wash painting — Hongcun village, whose moon-shaped pond and whitewashed walls have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000; return in the evening when lantern light reflects on still water
- Explore the quieter sister village of Xidi — fewer crowds than Hongcun, with over 300 Qing-dynasty courtyard homes and carved stone archways
- Try your hand at Huizhou ink-stick carving — a private workshop at the historic Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory, a craft recognized as national-level intangible cultural heritage (daily sessions at 09:00, 10:00, 14:00, 15:00; advance reservation required)
- Visit a Maofeng tea garden — in spring, pick fresh leaves and learn the art of pan-roasting from a local farmer; outside harvest season, enjoy a tea ceremony and garden tour
- All intercity transfers by private vehicle — with carefully controlled daily driving times and no backtracking

Your private chauffeur will be waiting at Huangshan Tunxi International Airport or Huangshan North Station holding a name sign. Transfer to your hotel takes approximately 20–30 minutes. No strenuous activities are scheduled today.
In the early evening, take a gentle stroll through Liyang IN Lane, a quieter and more authentic alternative to the heavily commercialized Tunxi Old Street. Traditional Huizhou architecture blends with artisan shops and riverside cafes.
⚠️ Please Note — Tour Guides at Tunxi Old Street: If you choose to walk through Tunxi Old Street, ignore any "low-cost guides" who approach you at the entrance. They will take you to high-priced shopping outlets. Your private guide will accompany you throughout.
Accommodation: Huangshan International Hotel — a four-star hotel located on Huashan Road, directly on the Xin'an River, approximately 5 minutes' walk to Tunxi Old Street and Liyang IN Lane. Alternatively: Days Inn by Wyndham Huangshan Baijing — a quiet hotel on the Xin'an River, 5 minutes by car to the old town.
Meals Included: Welcome Dinner
Morning drive to Huizhou Ancient City in Shexian County (approximately 40 minutes). The old town itself is free to enter, but the core sights — the Xuguo Stone Archway (the only eight-sided memorial archway in China), the Doushan Street of old residences, and the Huizhou Prefectural Hall — require a combined ticket of approximately ¥100 per person. Also visit the ancient Yuliang Dam, an impressive piece of Ming-dynasty hydraulic engineering on par with Dujiangyan.
In the afternoon, a private workshop at the Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory (approximately ¥228 per person). This historic ink-making workshop was founded in 1782 and is a nationally protected intangible cultural heritage site. The workshop runs daily at four fixed times — 09:00, 10:00, 14:00, and 15:00 — and must be reserved at least one day in advance. We handle the reservation for you. The session includes a 30-minute guided tour of the workshop followed by 30 minutes of hands-on gold tracing on a standard ink stick (approximately 10g), which you take home.
Return to Tunxi in the late afternoon. The evening is free.
🍽️ Dining Recommendation — Tunxi: Laojie Diyi Lou — a long-established restaurant with mild-flavored Huizhou cuisine and private dining rooms.
Accommodation: Huangshan International Hotel (or Days Inn by Wyndham Huangshan Baijing)
Meals Included: Breakfast
Morning transfer to Tangkou, the gateway town at the southern foot of Huangshan (approximately 1 hour). At the Zhaixi Transfer Center, board the scenic area shuttle bus to the Yungu Temple Station (single trip ¥19, 60+ half price, 65+ free). From here, ascend by the Yungu Cable Car (¥80, 60+ half price, 65+ free) to the Beginning-to-Believe Peak area at approximately 1,650 meters. Note: The cable car operates from 07:00 to 17:10 on weekdays (06:30–17:40 on weekends and public holidays). We recommend arriving at the cable car station by 15:00 at the latest.
The morning walk from the cable car to the hotel follows this route:
- Beginning-to-Believe Peak — a rocky outcrop with panoramic views of the surrounding granite pillars
- Black Tiger Pine — an ancient pine with a trunk that resembles a tiger crouching
- Guangmingding (Bright Summit) — the highest observation point on Huangshan (1,860 meters), reached by a gentle 20-minute walk from Black Tiger Pine. The views here are wide and open, with far fewer crowds than the Refreshing Terrace — an excellent sunrise alternative. The Bright Summit also houses a medical station (24-hour duty), one of three on the mountain.
- Continue to the Xihai Hotel to check in and rest.
⚠️ Important — Celestial Capital Peak: The Celestial Capital Peak reopens on April 7, 2026, after a five-year ecological closure. This is Huangshan's most dramatic summit — and also its most dangerous. The ascent involves steep, narrow stone steps and takes approximately 4 hours round trip. We do not arrange or recommend climbing this peak for mature travelers. It is suitable only for experienced young hikers. The peak is closed from December 1 through March 31 and during rain or fog.
Total walking today: approximately 3 hours at a gentle pace. Walking poles are highly recommended (¥5–10 at the mountain base).
In the late afternoon, walk 15 minutes to the Cloud-Dispelling Pavilion (Paiyun Ting) to watch the sunset over the West Sea Grand Canyon — a vast chasm of granite pillars and pine-studded cliffs that fills with golden light.
🍽️ Summit Dining Note: Water on the summit costs approximately ¥10 per bottle, and boxed meals approximately ¥50. We recommend bringing some snacks and fruit. Your hotel includes breakfast, which we suggest enjoying generously before the morning walk.
Accommodation: Xihai Hotel, Summit of Huangshan — Standard Room (approximately ¥1,150–1,450/night in regular season; +30% on weekends, +100% during holidays). The hotel is divided into Area A (five-star, renovated, with viewing balconies) and Area B (four-star, cost-effective, compact rooms). Area A upgrades are available at a supplement of approximately ¥300/night. The hotel does not have air conditioning (fans provided in summer); hot water is available with limited hours. All rooms have wall-mounted drying racks for damp clothing. The hotel provides complimentary long down coats for sunset and sunrise viewing. Reservations must be made at least 2 months in advance for regular season, and 3 months for peak season (July–August, National Day). The hotel is approximately 500 meters from the Cloud-Dispelling Pavilion (sunset) and a 10-minute walk to the Refreshing Terrace (sunrise).
Meals Included: Breakfast
Rise before dawn. Your guide will confirm the exact sunrise time. Walk to the Refreshing Terrace (Qingliang Tai), approximately 10 minutes from the hotel, one of the best sunrise viewpoints on the mountain. For a quieter alternative, the Dawn Pavilion (Shuguang Ting) is just 5 minutes further and often has fewer people with equally beautiful sunrise views.
After breakfast at the hotel, begin the descent. Walk to the West Sea Grand Canyon entrance and take the Funicular (¥100, 60+ half price, 65+ free) down through the heart of the canyon. From the lower station, walk to the Yuping Tower to see the Welcoming Pine (Yingke Song), the most famous tree in China, which has greeted visitors to Huangshan for over 800 years. Descend by the Yuping Cable Car (¥90, 60+ half price, 65+ free) to the foot of the mountain.
⚠️ Re-entry Note: Huangshan tickets are valid for 3 days with multiple entries. However, each re-entry must be reserved in advance through the "Huangshan Tourism Official Platform" mini-program before the first entry is activated. Offline windows no longer handle re-entry bookings. Your guide will assist with this.
Total walking today: approximately 2.5 hours. At the foot of the mountain, a private vehicle meets you and transfers you to Hongcun village (approximately 1 hour). Check into your guesthouse and rest.
🍽️ Dining Recommendation — Tangkou: Huangshan Renjia — local cuisine, affordable, clean and hygienic, near the mountain base.
Accommodation: Huizizai·Shanshui Hongcun Boutique Hotel — located in the Hongcun Art Town, approximately 7 minutes' walk to the West Gate of Hongcun scenic area and 50 meters from Qishu Lake. Features a sightseeing elevator and modern bathroom facilities. Alternatively: Hongcun Qingheyue Inn — a century-old Huizhou courtyard house inside the village, no steps, warm hospitality, approximately ¥200+ per person.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Morning exploration of Hongcun (admission ¥104, valid for 3 days with ID). This UNESCO World Heritage village was laid out in the shape of an ox, with the Moon Pond as its stomach and the winding canals as its intestines. Walk through:
- South Lake — the first view upon entering, with the arched bridge reflected in still water
- Moon Pond — the heart of the village, surrounded by whitewashed walls and upturned eaves
- Chengzhi Hall — the grandest of Hongcun's courtyard residences
In the afternoon, visit Xidi (admission ¥104, valid for 3 days), another UNESCO World Heritage village approximately 30 minutes' drive from Hongcun. Xidi is quieter than Hongcun, with over 300 Qing-dynasty courtyard homes, carved stone archways, and fewer crowds.
🌙 Evening — Hongcun Night Walk (19:00–20:30): Return to Hongcun in the evening. At around 19:00, the lanterns come on across the village. The Moon Pond and South Lake are particularly beautiful under the warm glow of reflected light, and the streets are much quieter than during the day. This is the best time for photographs. No additional ticket is required — your 3-day admission is valid.
🍽️ Dining Recommendation — Hongcun: Deyue Lou — located beside South Lake, with excellent views, refined cuisine, and lighter flavors suitable for mature palates.
Accommodation: Huizizai·Shanshui Hongcun Boutique Hotel (or Hongcun Qingheyue Inn)
Meals Included: Breakfast
Morning visit to a Huangshan Maofeng tea garden in Fuxi Township (approximately 35 minutes from Tunxi). Fuxi is the core origin area of Huangshan Maofeng, one of China's ten most famous teas.
Seasonal Tea Experience:
- April–May (harvest season): Pick fresh leaves yourself and learn the art of pan-roasting from a local farmer. The experience is included in your tour. Approximately 1.5–2 hours.
- June–March (non-harvest season): The garden tour and tea ceremony are still available. The visit includes a tour of the organic tea garden and a guided tea-tasting session led by the farmer (approximately ¥50 per person, including two cups of Maofeng tea). Tea leaves are not available for picking and no tea is gifted.
After the tea experience, return to Tunxi. The afternoon and evening are free. Your guide can suggest a walk along the Xin'an River or a return visit to Liyang IN Lane.
🛍️ Shopping Tip — Tea and Ink: For authentic Huangshan Maofeng, we recommend Xie Yuda Tea House on Tunxi Old Street. For Huizhou ink sticks, the Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory direct shop offers guaranteed quality. Avoid buying expensive tea and ink from unknown vendors on the old street.

FAQs
The itinerary has been specifically designed for mature travelers. The ascent uses the Yungu Cable Car; the descent uses the West Sea Grand Canyon Funicular and the Yuping Cable Car. Total walking on the mountain is approximately 5.5 hours across two days, at a gentle pace with frequent rest stops. Walking poles are provided.
We believe it is. A day trip to Huangshan requires 8–9 hours of continuous walking, which is far more exhausting for mature travelers. Staying overnight on the summit allows you to break the walking into two gentle days and experience both sunset and sunrise — the two moments when Huangshan is at its most transcendent.
The Xihai Hotel is divided into Area A (five-star, renovated, with viewing balconies) and Area B (four-star, compact but cost-effective rooms). Our default arrangement is Area B. Area A upgrades are available at a supplement of approximately ¥300/night. Summit hotels do not have air conditioning (fans are provided in summer), and hot water is available with limited hours. All rooms have wall-mounted drying racks. The hotel provides complimentary long down coats for sunrise and sunset viewing. We believe the privilege of sleeping on one of China's most sacred mountains far outweighs these minor inconveniences.
The Celestial Capital Peak reopens on April 7, 2026, after a five-year ecological closure. It is Huangshan's most dramatic summit — and also its most dangerous. The ascent involves steep, narrow stone steps and takes approximately 4 hours round trip. We do not arrange or recommend climbing this peak for mature travelers. It is suitable only for experienced young hikers. The peak is closed from December 1 through March 31 and during rain or fog.
Summit temperatures are 8–10°C lower than at the base. Even in summer, bring a long-sleeved jacket. In winter, a down coat is essential. We recommend layered clothing, a raincoat (not an umbrella — the mountain wind is strong), comfortable walking shoes with good traction, sunglasses, and sunscreen. A detailed packing list will be provided in your pre-departure handbook.
Most summit areas have 4G signal, though coverage may be weak in the West Sea Grand Canyon. Medical stations are located at the Xihai Hotel, Guangmingding (Bright Summit), and Yuping Tower, with 24-hour duty staff who can treat common ailments. We recommend bringing a personal supply of any regular medications.
Huangshan Scenic Area offers free admission for visitors aged 65 and above (advance reservation required through the "Huangshan Tourism Official Platform" mini-program). Visitors aged 60–64 enjoy half-price admission. Cable cars and the funicular also offer half-price for ages 60–64 and free for ages 65+. Please bring your passport as proof of age.
All listed hotels and major scenic area rest stops have Western-style toilets. The summit hotels have Western-style facilities, though more basic than city hotels. In some older public areas along the mountain trails, squat toilets may still be encountered. Bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer as backup.
Yes. Huangshan tickets are valid for 3 days with unlimited re-entries. However, each re-entry must be reserved in advance through the "Huangshan Tourism Official Platform" mini-program. Offline windows no longer handle re-entry bookings. Your guide will assist with this process.
From March 5 to November 30, the Yungu, Yuping, and Taiping cable cars operate 07:00–17:10 Monday to Friday, and 06:30–17:40 on weekends and public holidays. From December 1 to March 1, the operating hours are 08:00–16:40. The mountain trail gates close at 15:00 for uphill hikers. We recommend arriving at the cable car station well before closing time.
For Huangshan Maofeng tea, we recommend Xie Yuda Tea House on Tunxi Old Street. For Huizhou ink sticks, the Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory direct shop offers guaranteed quality. Avoid buying expensive tea and ink from street vendors or unknown shops on the old street. For local snacks, Jiujia Shaobing and Chengkan Maodoufu are trusted brands.
Yes. Jingdezhen is approximately 1 hour 16 minutes by high-speed train from Huangshan North Station. A two-day extension can be added to visit the Ancient Kiln Folk Customs Museum, the Taoxichuan Creative District, and the Imperial Kiln Site (a UNESCO World Heritage component). A hands-on porcelain-throwing workshop (approximately ¥100 per person) is available, and your finished piece can be shipped home. This creates a 10-day route combining Huangshan, the Huizhou villages, and the porcelain capital of China. Please inquire at time of booking.
The summit hotel is a special resource: 30% cancellation fee if cancelled 7+ days before arrival, 60% if cancelled 3-6 days before arrival, 100% if cancelled 1-2 days before arrival or on the day of arrival. No cancellations are allowed for bookings during statutory holidays.
It operates the same hours as the cable cars: 7:00-17:10 (Mon-Fri) and 6:30-17:40 (Weekends & Holidays) during peak season (Mar 5-Nov 30); 8:00-16:40 during winter (Dec 1-Mar 1). It may be temporarily adjusted or closed due to rain, snow or ice in winter.
Your safety is our top priority. In case of extreme weather (thunderstorms, heavy fog, snow), we will adjust the itinerary to alternative attractions at the foot of the mountain (such as Emerald Valley, Taiping Lake) or cultural experiences. Ticket fees for closed attractions will be refunded according to scenic area policies, and unused fees will be fully refunded.
We will automatically adjust to the Shexian Old Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory (also a state-owned time-honored brand with identical experience content) or Huizhou wood carving experience.
- Laojie Diyi Lou: ¥80-120 per person, private rooms require 1-day advance booking during peak season
- Huangshan Renjia: ¥60-80 per person, no advance booking required
- Deyue Lou: ¥100-150 per person, South Lake view seats require 2-day advance booking
The main entrance is free for public areas after 19:00. However, indoor attractions such as Chengzhi Hall and Wang's Ancestral Hall close at 17:30. Please visit them before that time if you wish to enter.
Yes. We provide one free disposable walking stick per person for the mountain hiking days, which you may keep after the trip.
