Overview
From Daoist Peaks to Imperial Mausoleums: A Slow Pilgrimage Through China’s Cultural Core.
There is a province in central China that holds three UNESCO World Heritage sites, the birthplace of Daoist martial arts, the tomb of a Ming emperor, and a bronze bell set that still rings true after 2,400 years. Hubei is not on every traveler’s radar — which is precisely why this journey exists.
This 10-day loop traces the newly completed Hubei High-Speed Rail Ring, a feat of engineering that connects Wuhan, Wudang Mountains, Xiangyang, Jingmen, and Jingzhou in a seamless circle. You will climb the sacred peaks of Wudang Mountain by cable car, stand before the Sword of Goujian and the Zenghouyi Chime Bells at the Hubei Provincial Museum, walk the ramparts of Jingzhou’s 2,800-year-old city wall, and enter the hushed courtyards of the Ming Xianling Mausoleum — one of China’s most overlooked imperial tombs.
This is a journey through the cultural core of China — Daoist philosophy, Chu Kingdom splendor, Three Kingdoms strategy, and Ming Dynasty grandeur, all threaded together by a high-speed rail loop that makes this complex itinerary possible in just ten unhurried days.
There are no rushed bus transfers, no compulsory shopping stops. Just a quiet circuit through China’s ancient heartland — where every bell, every peak, every tomb holds a story that has shaped Chinese civilization for millennia.

In the early evening, your guide can suggest a gentle stroll along the Hankou Bund — the riverside promenade where the Yangtze and Han Rivers converge. The walkway is flat, paved, and free to enter.
Accommodation: The Ritz-Carlton, Wuhan (opened March 28, 2026, the first Ritz-Carlton in Central China, located atop the IFC Tower at 330 meters with panoramic views of the Yangtze and Han Rivers converging)
Meals Included: Welcome Dinner
After a leisurely breakfast, visit the Hubei Provincial Museum (free entry, advance reservation required via official WeChat account, open Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, closed Mondays). Here you will stand before two of China's most iconic archaeological treasures: the Sword of Goujian, a 2,400-year-old bronze blade that still holds its edge, and the Zenghouyi Chime Bells, a 65-piece bronze bell set unearthed from a 5th-century BCE tomb. Allow 2–3 hours.
In the afternoon, visit the Yellow Crane Tower (admission ¥70, open 08:30–18:00 day session, 17:00 ticket sales end, 17:20 last entry; also a night session 19:30–22:00). This is Wuhan's city symbol — a five-story pagoda perched on Snake Hill overlooking the Yangtze River. Allow 1.5–2 hours.
Accommodation: The Ritz-Carlton, Wuhan
Meals Included: Breakfast
Morning high-speed train from Wuhan/Hankou Station to Wudangshan West Station (approximately 3 hours).
Upon arrival, a private vehicle transfers you to your hotel. In the afternoon, visit the Prince's Slope (Taizipo), a ninth-century temple complex built into a steep hillside, and the Purple Cloud Palace (Zixiao Gong), the largest and best-preserved Daoist temple on the mountain. Both are accessible on foot with minimal climbing.
Please Note: Wudang Mountain requires advance reservation through the "Wudang Mountain Smart Tourism" WeChat mini-program. The scenic area is open year-round 07:30–17:30 (last entry 17:30). The cable car operates 07:30–17:30, with last descent at 16:30. We recommend arriving at the cable car station by 15:30 at the latest to allow adequate time for the summit visit.
Admission: The combined scenic area ticket (¥234 standard, including park entry and shuttle bus; ¥182 for ages 60–69; ¥100 for ages 70+) covers the core scenic spots (Golden Summit, Purple Cloud Palace, Southern Cliff Palace, Prince's Slope). An additional ¥27 for the Golden Summit and ¥15 for the Purple Cloud Palace apply on top of the base ticket.
Accommodation: Wanda Yiho Hotel Wudangshan (located at the foot of Wudang Mountain, approximately 10 minutes' drive from the scenic area entrance, a new high-end hotel by Wanda Hotels & Resorts)
Meals Included: Breakfast
Rise early and depart the hotel by 6:30 AM to catch the first cable car from the Qiongtai Station. The cable car ride takes approximately 10 minutes, followed by a 40–60 minute walk from the upper cable car station to the Golden Summit (Jinding), the highest point on Wudang Mountain at 1,612 meters. While the cable car does not operate early enough for sunrise, the morning cloud sea over the surrounding peaks is a spectacle in its own right. Important: The cable car operates 07:30–17:30, with the last descent at 16:30. Please plan your summit visit accordingly.
The Golden Summit is the spiritual heart of Wudang — a bronze hall cast in Beijing and transported here in 1416, its golden roof visible for miles. The surrounding temples cling to the very edge of the cliff. After descending by cable car, visit the Southern Cliff Palace (Nanyan Gong), a temple complex built into a sheer rock face, reached by a paved path with guardrails. Allow 1–1.5 hours.
In the late afternoon, enjoy a Wudang Tai Chi experience at your hotel, led by a Daoist practitioner. This gentle introduction to the martial art that was born on this mountain is designed for all ages and fitness levels.

Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. In the afternoon, visit the Ancient Longzhong Scenic Area (admission ¥87 peak season, including shuttle bus, open 08:30–17:30). This is where Zhuge Liang, the legendary strategist of the Three Kingdoms, lived in seclusion before Liu Bei made three visits to persuade him to serve as his military advisor — the famous "Three Visits to the Thatched Cottage." The scenic area includes his thatched retreat, memorial halls, and forested paths. Allow 3–4 hours.
In the late afternoon, return to the city and explore the Xiangyang Ancient City Wall (free entry, open all day). The wall overlooks the Han River and is one of the best-preserved Ming-dynasty city fortifications in China.

In the afternoon, visit the Xi Family Pond (Xijia Chi, free entry, open 08:00–18:00), a 2,000-year-old private garden originally built during the Eastern Han Dynasty — one of China's oldest surviving private gardens.
The remainder of the afternoon is free for independent exploration of Xiangyang's old quarter.
Accommodation: InterContinental Xiangyang
Meals Included: Breakfast
Morning high-speed train from Xiangyang East Station to Jingmen West Station (the fastest direct service takes 29 minutes; actual travel time varies depending on the specific train, up to 39–40 minutes for some services). Built between 1519 and 1566, it is the largest and best-preserved single imperial mausoleum of the Ming Dynasty in central and southern China. Unlike the crowded Ming Tombs in Beijing, Xianling receives relatively few visitors, and its sacred way, dragon-scale path, and twin burial chambers remain hauntingly quiet. Allow 2–3 hours.
After the visit, transfer back to Jingmen West Station and take the high-speed train to Jingzhou Station (approximately 30 minutes; the fastest direct service takes around 30 minutes, with actual travel time varying by specific train).
Upon arrival in Jingzhou, visit the Jingzhou Ancient City Wall and Binyang Tower (admission ¥35, open 08:00–17:30). The city wall dates back over 2,800 years, making it one of the oldest and best-preserved city walls in southern China. Climb the Binyang Tower for views over the moat and old city.

His residence has been restored as a memorial hall.
After lunch, take the high-speed train from Jingzhou Station to Hankou Station (approximately 1–1.5 hours). Upon arrival, the afternoon is free for a last stroll along the Hankou Bund or independent exploration. Your guide can also suggest last-minute shopping at the Jianghan Road pedestrian street.
